Raleigh Is The Place…For Fashion?

Redii RaleighLast night I attended a great event launching REDii Raleigh.  What is REDii?  Well I am glad you asked.  REDii stands for Raleigh Emerging Designers Innovation Incubator.  Last night was the official launch party and Fashion Extravaganza which featuring some of Raleigh’s dynamic new fashion designers.

Now I know what you are thinking…why would a T-shirt and jeans kind of guy like me want to attend a fashion show and how does it tie into what I do and blog about.  It all comes down to two things:

  1. Another way showcase how the Triangle (specifically Raleigh) is not the Mayberry that many still think we are and to show, even our own residents, some of the great emerging trends.
  2. Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
Now, I have written about how Raleigh and the Triangle is changing for the better.  The area is constantly getting accolades about being the best city or area for (fill in the blank).  The list is almost exhaustive.  You can look here or here for two of latest post on these topics.
Now you may be asking about how there can be innovation and entrepreneurship in fashion and clothing?  Fashion is always evolving…you don’t see a lot of bellbottoms or leisure suits running around do you?  Today their are more and more clothing lines than ever and many of them hit a very specific niche market.  And the materials and how they are being made is some of the uniqueness of the clothing themselves.  Last night, there were lines for children and men.  Women clothing lines dominated, however they ranged from professional to casual to high style.  One of the lines that caught my attention was the clothing line was made out of recycled materials.  The variety was obvious by the more than 20 designers.
Here is some great info from the REDii website
  • REDii is tied into NC State’s College of Textiles (one of the best in the world) and College of Design.
  • The mission of REDii is to help fashion entrepreneurs create, launch and operate their business by providing professional mentoring and business education programs that maximize their opportunity for success.
  • REDii’s Designer in Residence program gives designers the opportunity to test market their products in the REDii boutique while being mentored and taking advantage of the REDii entrepreneurship programs.
