How Social Media is Effectively Changing Our Lives

I hope you had a great Halloween yesterday and you did not fill up on too much of the kids’ candy.  As I sit here watching a Halloween classic, “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” (made in 1966), and reading through tweets and online news articles, articles about Hurricane Sandy (#Frankenstorm) and the latest political discussions, I am realizing how divergent the two really are.

Also, I am in realization that there are literally, millions of people without electricity right now.  However, even with this inconvenience, they are completely up to date on their weather, electricity status, and all that is important to them because of their smart phones and social media.
Now, the earliest forms of social networking sites started in 1997 with (which shut down in late 2000).  In 2003, social networking sites became more popular and common with launches like LinkedIn and MySpace.  Today, you cannot go anywhere and see anything without references to Facebook Likes, Twitter hashtags, or Google +1’s.  The challenge is knowing how to use them effectively for your professional and personal life.
Social media is not only prevalent in traditional marketing, but also on television, sports, and businesses large and small.  The aspect of being connected with larger and larger groups of people with similar connections and interest is something that was something non-existent just a handful of years ago.  Then came the rise of sites like ICQ, AIM, and Messenger to start communicating one-on-one with people across the country.  Then came the ability to communicate with mass amounts of people on sites like Friendster, MySpace, and Hi5.
But social networking and social media has far evolved from even those days when we still tied to our computers or bulky laptops.
Today, with the technology constantly evolving, the use and availability of smartphones, tablets and 3-pound laptops, has proliferated the use of social networking sites.  And these have been weaved into our daily lives.
For those currently without power in the northeastern United States, the use of social media during this storm has been something remarkable.  Allowing residents to track the storm, being able to inform their power company of power outages, learn about when power outages are expected to be back on and allowing local authorities to inform keep their citizens continuously updated on what they needed to know.
Now that’s revolutionary.
